Soothing the Spirit: A Wellspring for Collective Healing An Online “Drop-in” Group

“Soothing the Spirit” is an ongoing facilitated discussion group designed to help Unitarian Universalists and others process the emotional and spiritual toll of today’s turbulent social and political landscape.

Soothing the Spirit is a processing group, providing space for participants to share their experiences and emotions in a supportive, spiritually grounded environment. Each session will also include helpful spiritual recovery from narcissistic abuse (in both the public and private sphere), offering insights into spiritual healing, reclaiming personal agency, and fostering resilience.

Participants register for five-sessions, meeting every other week, with the option to renew for additional sessions as they find helpful. Participants can “drop in” to their sessions as needed, so this program is designed to work around your schedule.

Each one-hour Zoom session includes:

  • grounding practice (such as meditation, guided reflection, or breathwork) to help integrate the discussion and support participants in moving forward with clarity and strength.
  • brief wisdom teaching grounded in spiritual recovery from trauma and abuse.
  • An online facilitated discussion for participants to process their emotions in a supportive community.

Session Themes

The sessions offer opportunities for participants to “come as you are,” interacting with themes that explore different aspects of resilience, grief, and healing. These themes are universal and open-ended enough to allow new participants to enter at any time while ensuring that on-going participants continue to find depth and meaning.

Why This Program?

Unitarian Universalists and others committed to justice and compassion often carry deep emotional wounds from witnessing societal harm. Without spaces to process these emotions, many experience burnout, cynicism, or despair. “Soothing the Spirit” offers a way through—not by ignoring pain, but by honoring it and transforming it into strength and clarity.

By meeting every other week, the program balances the need for structured reflection with enough space between sessions for participants to process and integrate their experiences. The ongoing format allows individuals to continue their healing journey at a sustainable pace.
